CBD (short for “cannabidiol”) is the most abundant of the more than 113 naturally occurring compounds called cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. Cannabinoids are also produced naturally inside the human body. These are called endocannabinoids, “endo” meaning “inside.” CBD is a phytocannabinoid, “phyto” meaning plant. Phyto and endo cannabinoids both act on the endocannabinoid system (ECS) which helps regulate nearly every system in the human body. The ECS is known to manage homeostasis, or balance, and affects processes such as appetite, mood, memory, sleep, and immune functions.
What is CBD?
How does CBD work?
CBD acts on the CB1 and CB2 receptors of the endo-cannabinoid system (ECS), affecting nearly every system in our bodies. The ECS has been described as a foundation level operating system that regulates other systems. The goal is always the same—homeostasis—maintaining balance in spite of an ever changing emotional and physiological environment.
What are the benefits of CBD?
Emerging research has begun to recognize the many benefits of CBD. Due to government regulations we are not able to discuss or cite the research here. A quick Google search will provide ample information and for the armchair scientists, you can get lost in the volumes of PubMed studies. It’s fascinating stuff, especially when you consider that CBD is completely natural and comes directly from the hemp plant with no synthesized additives. Mother nature’s gift to humanity!
No, unlike its cousin tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is non psychoactive which means it will not cause any feelings of intoxication or “high.”
Will CBD show up in a drug test?
Drug tests are designed to detect THC, not CBD. If you’re using a product that has zero THC, no THC will show up on a drug test. Some “full spectrum” CBD products have up to .3% THC and this could potentially show up on a drug test, especially if you’re an athlete taking a highly sensitive test. ZBD bars have Zero THC.
What’s the difference between hemp, marijuana, and cannabis?
Hemp and marijuana are the two primary species of the plant Cannabis sativa. They both contain CBD. Hemp has a much higher percentage of CBD and very little THC (the psychoactive molecule that gets you high). Marijuana is the opposite, with higher levels of THC and very low levels of CBD.
The proprietary strains of hemp that we use for our oil are rich in CBD and contain almost no THC. We then do a secondary CO2 extraction to eliminate all the THC so there is zero THC in our CBD oil.
What’s the difference between Full Spectrum and Broad Spectrum hemp oil?
The main difference is that Full spectrum has some THC while broad spectrum has zero THC. Full spectrum oils are created with a single extraction of the hemp plant, and contain more components of the hemp plant, like chlorophyll, terpenes and other cannabinoids, including up to .3% THC.
In order to eliminate THC entirely, a second extraction needs to be done, resulting in a “broad spectrum” of hemp compounds as opposed to a “full spectrum.” All ZBD products use broad spectrum hemp oil and do not contain any THC.
Where does your CBD oil come from?
How is CBD extracted from the hemp plant?
There are three primary ways CBD is extracted from the hemp plant: using solvents like butane, using ethanol (alcohol), and high pressure CO2 extraction. They each have their pros and cons. Butane is cheap but leaves a solvent residue in the oil; alcohol is also inexpensive but not very efficient so requires twice as much biomass to extract the same amount of CBD; C02 is expensive, but provides pure, high quality CBD oil, along with other cannabinoids and beneficial substances. Needless to say, we use C02 extraction for ZBD. The additional cost is more than made up for in the superior quality and purity of our oil.
Is CBD legal?
The short answer is YES, CBD is legal. With the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp-derived CBD was removed from the federal list of Controlled Substances, essentially legalizing the growth, production, and sale of hemp and hemp-based products.
When federal laws change, there is often a transition period before state and local laws and regulations are brought into compliance with federal law. Today we are in such a transition period where some states and municipalities may regulate CBD differently than the federal government.
